Program Format

Expect the unexpected

Unlike other community leadership programs in Indiana, the Hoosier Fellows program is dedicated to developing leadership in high-potential, experienced leaders. The program focuses on you and your performance, helping you gain new skills and leadership competencies you can use to make your organization stronger and more successful.

Get ready to explore all facets of leadership

In the Hoosier Fellows program, you’ll:

  • Confront leadership dilemmas in a range of environments that are very different from your own
  • Be motivated to look deep within yourself on issues critical to good leadership
  • Interact with leaders and leadership scholars both during and after the program
  • Take part in shared experiences that will strengthen your understanding of leadership in context

Build your network

You’ll have time to get to know the other fellows well when you share stories and journals of your leadership experiences. You’ll meet and interact with outstanding leaders and experts in the field of leadership. You’ll be invited to Tobias Leadership Center events and lectures. And you’ll work with our faculty fellows—a core group of IU faculty who do research, teach classes, and conduct workshops related to leadership. After successful completion of the Hoosier Fellows program, you’re automatically a member of the Tobias Leadership Network.

Explore leadership in a variety of environments

Although the Hoosier Fellows program is based in Indianapolis, you’ll travel across the state and beyond to discover how leadership elements vary in military, religious, sports, entertainment, government, education, and business environments.

Past venues include:

  • Camp Atterbury
  • Fort Knox
  • St. Meinrad monastery
  • Professional sports facilities
  • Indianapolis Opera
  • City and state government facilities
  • University of Notre Dame
  • Indiana University
  • FedEx
  • United States Military Academy at West Point

Your commitment

Hoosier Fellows meet monthly for 10 months. Unless otherwise specified, sessions begin on Thursday evenings with dinner and an evening program and conclude around 3 p.m. on Friday afternoons. Many activities are held in Indianapolis, but some sessions take place in other locations.

As a Hoosier Fellow, you’re expected to be present at all meetings. You’ll also have homework to do between class sessions.
